NATO Enlargment: Who and Why?
Gabrijela TURIMANDZOVA
Ministry of Defence

Abstract: This paper is result of the 3-month postgraduate research at the Oxford University at the period May-July 2000 under supervision of Prof. PhD Alex Pravda, Professor at the St. Anthony's College. At the focus of this paper are built the basics of NATO Enlargement process as a system of collective security. The question that should be answered is about the role of NATO regarding the major changes in Europe, the fall of the Berlin Wall, collapse of Czechoslovak Republic, Soviet Union and Yugoslavia and building of the new security architecture in Europe. For the East Central European states, joining NATO is now the guiding principle of their foreign and security policies. Knowing that NATO as an institution today has a new role in the world politics, and also knowing that the needs of NATO are growing up together with the maintaining the peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region, the main question for discussion is its enlargement. To the East Europeans, NATO represents a desperately needed security shield to protect them from Russian domination – and possibly future German domination as well. The most feasible way to neutralize that threat is to be included in NATO’s policy organs and work to guarantee that the Alliance is transformed into pan-European security forum.

Pance LEVKOV
Military Academy "General Mihailo Apostolski" – Skopje

Abstract: The global world's trends show to us that for one future Army more information will be needed to be managed and more to operate worldwide. The future Army must observe in a real time, orient continuously, decide immediately and act in an hour or less.
To answer all these questions we need one powerful scientific approach. That is the systems approach. Systems approach can give the opportunity to grasp all dynamics of battlefield to the soldier. The basic definition of the system approach understands the way. This understanding is based on a paradigm that every organization including the Army forces, are one kind of a system. A system is an integrated composite of people, products, and processes, as applicable that provides a capability to satisfy a stated need or objective.

Zoran IVANOVSKI
Military Academy – Skopje

Abstract: The logistic process using fundamental elements of logistics: requirements, procurement, distribution and the basic aspects of command: organization, planning, execution and supervision, forms a bridge between economic system of the nation and the actual operations of the combat forces.
Logistics is: an art, a science, a process. The logistics process is at one and the same time the economic element of our military operations and the military element of our economy.
The objective of a logistic effort is the creation and sustained support of combat forces. This is one of many different definitions of logistics. In order to understood logistics it must be approached and described from various points of view.
Logistics represents a link between war-making capability of the nation, which is frequently called “war potential” and armed forces. War potential is measured by its ability to mobilize and to employ its economic and industrial resources. This industrial mobilization is a massive logistic process.

Toni MILESKI, Defence Institute - Skopje

Abstract: This study elaborates on the separately military-geographic geographic characteristics of the population of the municipalities from the western part of the Republic of Macedonia, whose territories partially or completely belong to the border area. The data has been presented and analysed both separately for each populated area, and altogether for each municipality, according to the information from the census in 1961, 1981 and 1994. Although there is information about the population of the Republic of Macedonia, what lacks is a concrete analysis concerning the statistics about the movement and the ethnic structure of the population in the municipalities, according to the existing territorial division. The analyses of the population from different aspects including the military and geographic are very important..
The data on 1961 and 1981 is classified for each municipality on the basis of the populated areas that currently belong to the previously mentioned municipalities, but in the analysed years were parts of other municipalities.

Contemporary War
Oliver BAKRESKI
Defence Institute - Skopje

Abstract: Contemporary wars represent comprehensive, intensive and destructive phenomena. All the available human potentials as well as the materially technical resources are employed in them. They are waging in all weather conditions and have no spatial limitations. Through a short historic retrospective, the study firstly elaborates the beginnings of the war as an evil and a phenomenon, which follows the mankind from its existence up to now. Development of the countries as well as civilisations imposes the imperative on certain countries to accomplish superiority and domination over other countries. It brought to intensifying of the manufacture of new types of weapons as a consequence to the technical and technological achievements. In conditions of a contemporary war, it is impossible to control and direct modern technological systems without adequate support of the computer systems. Therefore, one part of the study stresses the revolutionary changes in respect of the war technology as well as the possible physiognomy for some future war, which would be determined by the scientific-technical progress.
